Wednesday 3 June 2015

Hi to all.

It is now Wednesday and we have been a bit busy.  At the moment we are in Gawler and tomorrow we will be moving off to Port Hughes, on the York Peninsula where we will be staying for 10 days.

Last Saturday we moved off from the lovely town of Goolwa and headed in to the suburb of Brighton, one of the suburbs of Adelaide.  It is a great spot about 4 klms east of Glenelg and our caravan park is right on the beach.  Fair dinkum, we are 20 metres from the surf club and about 40 metres from the water.  Just awesome hearing the waves breaking on the shore over night.

The worst thing about the caravan park is getting to it.  The road in is just a constant zig zag, through tiny roundabouts and down really steep hills.  Can just imagine the jeep screaming when it comes time to come out.

Our first day was just relaxing after setting up and down to the local cafĂ© area.  It is very much like Bay St. Port Melbourne.  Just like the suburb Brighton in Melbourne, it is full of the beautiful people, so of course I fitted in like a glove.

The following day we headed over to the little town of Hahndorf.  This is a german inspired town just out of Adelaide. It is amazing the amount of tourists wandering around this place.  The weather was fairly average but it didn't deter us intrepid tourists.  Walked the length of the main street and, for me, it was fairly disappointing.  There was only one shop that was playing loud music, of what I would call german leiderhausen type music.  Just a whole lot of tourist hype really.  Very disappointing.

After leaving there we needed to see a real tourist attraction so we headed up to the Mt. Lofty lookout.  From all of the tourist info, it shows magnificent views all the way to Adelaide.  What it failed to mention is the fact it is the wettest place in Australia.  As can be seen from the photo, great views of Adelaide in the photo with Deb standing in a Cyclone.

Come Monday we headed into Adelaide for a tourist walk around.  Being true tourists, we caught the tram from Glenelg into the city and strolled around.  Went down to the Botanical Gardens which were just so beautiful to stroll around.  Nearby is the Adelaide University and the historical buildings in that precinct are just incredible.  Next to the university is a great statue commemorating the Anzacs.  I think I have become a real art critic as it was just a beautiful tribute.

Finished our tour of Adelaide and back to Glenelg on the tram.  Deb is still hunting for a haircut, but with no luck in Glenelg.  Prices up to $65 just for a cut.  I am trying to convince her of my haircutting ability but so far, no luck.

Left Adelaide on Monday and headed to our current location of Gawler.  This has the title of being the first country town in South Australia.  Strolled the main street and finally, Deb has found somewhere to get a haircut.  That is a weight off my mind.  Went to the info centre and there is not that much to do in Gawler.  Just a few historical walks.  One thing that I have found is that in South Australia they seem to take great pride in their history.  Every little town that you drive through has an abundance of Historical buildings.  Seems like in Victoria we would rather smash it down and build something new.

Headed out this morning for a trip to Clare.  It is in the centre of the wine making region.  It is about 90ks away.  On the way we took a bit of a detour to check out a historical house, Martindale Hall.  This National Trust building was used in the movie Picnic at Hanging Rock.  Got some photos of the outside but there were no photos allowed inside so we didn't go in.  The cost was $12 each so we saved our money.  Headed in to Clare from there but if you aren't into wineries, there is not much there for you, except coffee, of course.

On the way back we took a detour to Kapunda.  An old mining town with lots of history.  Took a walk around the mining site and Deb did a bit of a geographical survey.  From there took a photo of another Big thing.  The Big Miner.  He is about 7 metres tall and the detail is exceptional.  Right down to shoelaces in his boots.

We were all toured out by this stage so it was back to the van to wrestle with the tv aerial.  It is such a crap spot for tv reception.  Last night we had reception only on channel 7 and only up until about 9 o'clock.  Lucky we have got a portable hard drive with movies on it.
